Tiger Woods: Quail Hollow Championship 2010

Publicado  Thursday, April 29, 2010

For many, any news that involves Tiger Woods is old. Fans have grown weary of the Tiger-Tale it seems. However, if you want to talk Tiger Woods and the Quail Hollow Championship, you can probably find some takers. Some things just never grow old.
As it is though, Tiger doesn’t look too wonderful. He has put his balls in the water on the 17th and 18th holes already this morning. That kind of golfing will get you no where except possibly seven shots behind the frontrunners. With that, Phil Mickelson hits the course in about an hour and the world will surely be watching to see if he can handle the Quail Hollow Championship 2010 any better than Tiger has thus far.

The Quail Hollow Championship 2010 is only the second PGA event for Tiger Woods since his horrible off-the-course adventures were made public.. And, in the first go at it, he managed to set a personal record in round one only to lose is grip later in the weekend. Thus far this morning, the Quail Hollow Championship 2010 hasn’t been very kind to the troubled golfer. Hopefully he can at least get his on-the-course act together before moving much further into the season.

Today Show Looks at the Tonya Craft Trial

Publicado

Tonya Craft is the school teacher accused of molesting children left in her care. Until this morning, William Anderson was almost alone in scrutinizing the case, but the Today Show took a look this morning. Here’s the segment.
I wish there had been a little more emphasis on the actions of the trial judge. Child molestation is monstrous. To be falsely accused of child molestation must be galling. And to be falsely accused and then go to trial where the presiding judge is making lousy decisions left and right has to be terrifying.

It happens more often than most people want to believe. For more, go here and here.

Happy Town is More Strange Than Scary; It Stars Sam Neill and Lauren German

Publicado  Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Happy Town, starring Sam Neill and Lauren German, premiered on ABC Wednesday night. The mystery dramatic series takes place in Haplin, Minnesota, and centers around alleged abductions plus a new murder allegedly tied to one deemed as the "Magic Man." This murder is the first serious crime that's happened in five years, but begins to open up a can of worms. The episodes of Happy Town are an hour each. The program is very fast moving, but comes across as rather strange instead of creepy or scary, despite the hype.

The ABC Premiere of Happy Town, starring Sam Neill and Lauren German, Was Very Bizarre

The prologue opens with Georgia Bravin (Sarah Gadon) and Andrew Haplin (Ben Schnetzer) making out, and after she's dropped off in the woods because they have a secret romance, she hears something mysterious in a pond's warming shack many feet away, but is relieved after seeing a hawk above her making noise and heads home in relief. Yet in that shack Jerry Friddle, the "town weirdo" is bound and threatened with a gun, and mumbles a confession, but ends up with a spike driven through his head.

Site Seeks to Restore Stephen Baldwin to His Former Glory (for God’s Sake)

Publicado

I have nothing against Stephen Baldwin, I really don’t. He’s sometimes called the least-talented Baldwin, but I’d give that title to Billy. Still, the idea behind this video is all kinds of crazy.

Apparently Stephen Baldwin has fallen on hard times financially, and has declared bankruptcy. He’s not alone. Celebrities from M.C. Hammer to Donald Trump have declared bankruptcy in the past. What sets Stephen Baldwin apart is that an online charity is soliciting donations to “restore” the actor, for the sake of the gospel. You have to visit the site to get the full effect of how odd and ill-conceived the entire plan seems to be. Stephen Baldwin himself is reportedly not directly involved. For his own sake, I sincerely hope that’s true. If close friends of his were involved in creating this appeal, Mr. Baldwin may want to consider finding new friends.

I’d like to copy a couple of things from the Q & A section followed by my observations.

Q- Why does Stephen need personal wealth?

A- Stephen’s influence is in Hollywood. Hollywood worships money and without it you are seen as a loser and cannot be an effective influence to this group.

And? Are we to “buy” spiritual influence with personal wealth? Some Christians are wealthy and some are not, but to seek wealth so that you won’t be seen as a “loser” is to be seriously misguided. And, really, if millions of dollars were to be donated to Stephen Baldwin – and that’s a sizable “if” – would that produce effective influence? Or would it be seen as evidence that a sucker is born every minute, and many of them are fans of Stephen Baldwin? Perhaps, instead, there is another way to look at the difficulties he now faces. This may be an opportunity for Mr. Baldwin to have his values transformed, to be freed from trying to satisfy a culture that worships money.

Q- How much money does he need?

A- From what I read in public court documents Stephen needs several million dollars to pay all of his creditors but he deserves hundreds of millions for his Job like faithfulness in the face of relentless loss and persecution.

I’d like to see the formula used to calculate just how much money Stephen Baldwin “deserves”. And could we see how that formula works for some other faithful Christians? What about Bible translators? Orphanage directors? Hospice workers? Military chaplains? Or perhaps it’s the “relentless loss and persecution” that entitles Mr. Baldwin to hundreds of millions of dollars. In which case, could someone at The Restoration of Stephen Baldwin please apply the formula to the Christians currently being persecuted in places like Iraq, China and Bangladesh? I was going to speculate on whether teaching Sunday School might at least entitle me to a $100 Borders gift card or something like that, but I don’t think I’ll go there. The Christian faith rests on the conviction that we don’t deserve any good thing from God. The blessings we receive are gifts of grace, and they are certainly not always monetary.

Particularly galling to many who’ve commented on the appeal is that over $1 million of Stephen Baldwin’s debt is in unpaid taxes. It’s hard to see failure to pay one’s taxes as resulting from persecution. Here’s part of Rod Dreher’s commentary at Beliefnet:

What kind of Christian-crackhead logic is it that says the faithful have a duty to give alms to make a failed spendthrift actor rich once again to advance the kingdom of God? Is going broke in part because you didn’t pay your taxes really a matter of spiritual warfare? Did the Devil make poor Stephen Baldwin not obey the law? The mind boggles, the stomach turns. The funny thing is, this stunt, which will get lots of coverage, will guarantee both a) that Hollywood people laugh even harder at Christian nitwittery, and b) that no matter how rich he should become through this online telethon, Stephen Baldwin will have no “influence” in Hollywood — none, zero, gesphincto — because he’d be seen as the honor-deficient bozo who didn’t pay his taxes and got bailed out anyway by credulous born-agains.

Son of Sylvia

Publicado

Did you recognize Sons of Sylvia, the country-pop trio who performed their single “Love Left to Lose” on tonight’s episode of American Idol? In 2007, these guys won Fox’s The Next Great American Band, the Idol-for-bands series created by Idol mastermind Simon Fuller. Back then they were known as the Clark Brothers, and their distinctive bluegrass interpretations of tunes like Bob Dylan’s “Maggie’s Farm” led them to victory over 11 other semifinalists. “We went from sending in an audition tape to being on the show to having to figure out, every week, a new way to play a song,” lead singer Ashley Clark (pictured, left) tells the Music Mix now. “When we won and all the fireworks went off, it was pretty much like, ‘How did we get here?’”
You might ask them the same question today. Almost immediately after winning The Next Great American Band, Ashley Clark and his brothers Adam and Austin Clark (pictured, center and right) hit the studio to start work on what would become their debut. “I would say we’d written about 350 songs, something crazy like that,” Ashley says. “We were just trying to discover our sound more…We wrote some bluegrass stuff, [but] it just didn’t feel like, at least right now, that was the time for it.” So the Clarks kept plugging away in studios from L.A. to Nashville to Vancouver to Colorado. As the winners of NGAB, they were signed to 19 Recordings, the same label as Idol alums like Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, Daughtry, Jordin Sparks, and more. 19 and Interscope Records helped set the siblings up with industry pros who guided them toward the glossier pop style heard on Revelation, which arrived in stores at last this week.
About a year ago, the Clark Brothers became Sons of Sylvia. “We wanted to change our name with the music. We just wanted a fresh start with a fresh sound,” says Ashley. Sylvia, naturally, is their real-life mom’s first name. “She’s totally thrilled. When we told her we changed the name, she was crying. My dad was like, ‘Why don’t you name it Sons of Frederick?’”
That’s not the only family connection that’s come in handy for Sons of Sylvia. Hitmaker Ryan Tedder (“Bleeding Love,” “Halo”) is a second cousin — Tedder’s mother and Sylvia herself are first cousins, for those keeping track at home — and he co-wrote and produced “Love Left to Lose,” the single they played on Idol. “I knew [Tedder] before he got big,” Ashley says. “My early twenties is when we started hanging out more in Nashville. We lived together. We were broke together. We backpacked across Europe together, just for fun. We got mugged in Paris one time together.”
Ashley Clark was only “a little nervous” about performing on Idol tonight. “I just try to do my best and get into the song, even though there’s cameras and things. I can’t imagine what the contestants — well, actually, I can imagine,” the reality competition veteran realizes with a chuckle. “Actually, it feels a lot better. It’s not like people are going to vote you off.”
After Idol, Sons of Sylvia go back to opening for Carrie Underwood on a U.S. tour that extends through December (including some Canadian dates along the way). “We’ve been on the road since March, just going non-stop,” Ashley says. “It’s a blast. It keeps getting better and better. We don’t want it to end.”

U.S. Approves First Offshore Wind Farm Near Cape Cod (Update2)

Publicado

April 28 (Bloomberg) -- Interior Secretary Ken Salazar approved the first wind farm in U.S. waters, a project of more than $1 billion off the Massachusetts coast that was opposed by the late Senator Edward Kennedy.

Cape Wind, 130 wind-powered turbines to be placed in the shallow waters of Nantucket Sound, will have to be reconfigured to “reduce the visual impact” from land in order to go forward, Salazar said in a statement today. When completed the wind farm may generate enough power for more than 200,000 average U.S. homes, the Interior Department said.

Homeowners whose ocean views would be affected and local environmentalists spent $20 million over nine years to block the project. The wind farm also was opposed by Indian tribes and Kennedy, a Democrat who represented Massachusetts in Congress for 46 years until he died in August. The turbines would be visible from the Kennedy family compound in Hyannisport, though Salazar said steps have been taken to improve the view.

“I am convinced there is a path we can take forward that both honors our responsibility to protect the natural and cultural resources of Nantucket Sound, and at the same time meets the need to repower our economy with clean energy produced from wind power,” Salazar said today at the Massachusetts statehouse in Boston.

Legal Challenges

Cape Wind still needs approval from the Federal Aviation Administration because the turbines may interfere with tower-to- aircraft transmissions. A legal challenge to the wind farm is pending in the Massachusetts courts, and more lawsuits are likely, said Pat Parenteau, a professor at Vermont Law School in South Royalton who specializes in ocean and coastal resources.

The developer will be required to paint the metal turbines “off-white to reduce contrast with the sea and sky yet remain visible to birds,” Salazar said in the statement.

The department is also requiring that the developer take extra steps to ensure any archeological items in the seabed are protected before construction begins, Salazar said. Two Wampanoag Indian tribes say Cape Wind would disturb ancient burial grounds that are underwater.

The Obama administration said the wind farm will create “several hundred” construction jobs and amount to one of the nation’s largest single sources for the reduction of greenhouse- gas emissions blamed for climate change.

The project will cut carbon-dioxide pollution from traditional coal-fired power plants by 700,000 tons a year, the equivalent of removing 175,000 cars from the road annually, the Interior Department said.

‘Bittersweet’ on Environment

“It’s bittersweet from an environmental standpoint,” Parenteau said. “On one hand you are talking about a very scenic area rich with wildlife. On the other hand, the wind farm is a clean-energy resource that in one stroke will remove close to 1 million tons of carbon a year from the air.”

Democratic Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts said the decision means “jobs and clean energy” for his state.

The move also puts the U.S. in a better position to compete in the global clean-energy market, according to Katherine Kennedy, a lawyer with the Natural Resources Defense Council in New York, who isn’t related to the late senator.

“Europe is way ahead of the U.S. in terms of numbers of offshore wind projects,” she said. “Finally, the U.S. has entered the race and has a chance to catch up.”

Cape Wind would generate a maximum of 468 megawatts from turbines spread over 25 square miles of waters about 5 miles off mainland Cape Cod, in an area known as Horseshoe Shoal. The developer, Cape Wind Associates LLC, said on March 31 it would buy turbines from Siemens AG of Germany, which pledged to open a U.S. office in Boston.

Energy Management Inc.

Principals in Energy Management Inc., a closely held Boston energy company, put up $40 million in development costs for the project from proceeds on the sale of six natural-gas power plants in 2000, according to Cape Wind spokesman Mark Rodgers.

The project still faces formidable challenges, including the securing of financing and working out power contracts with the local utility, according to Ethan Zindler, head of North American research for Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

“After nine years, now comes the hard part,” said Zindler, who estimates the wind farm’s cost may exceed $2 billion, double the estimate cited by the administration.

National Grid Plc

National Grid Plc, a London-based company that delivers power to about 3.3 million customers in the U.S. Northeast, said in December it would negotiate to buy the electricity generated by the Cape Wind farm. The company said in a statement today the talks are going “very well.”

President Barack Obama has pledged to double renewable energy from the wind, sun and biodegradable waste in three years. The Energy Department says wind can supply 20 percent of U.S. power by 2030, up from 1.8 percent today.

The U.S. gets no power from offshore wind turbines. Northern Europe already has about 2,000 megawatts of offshore wind capacity, with a target to reach 40,000 megawatts by 2020, according to Walter Musial, head of offshore wind research at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado.

About 6,300 megawatts of offshore wind are planned for the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf, the Great Lakes and British Columbia, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

The decision on Cape Wind will be felt throughout the industry, said Jerome Guillet, who was head of energy for Brussels-based lender Dexia SA before starting a financial advisory firm in Paris.

Leaders of 3,200 Wampanoag Indians with roots in Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard say Cape Wind’s turbine blades, reaching 440 feet into the air, would desecrate the view of the sunrise that’s essential to their prayer ceremonies. A month before Kennedy died on Aug. 25, he wrote to Obama imploring him to halt action on the wind farm, which would be visible from the senator’s home.

New York Immigrants Protest New Arizona Immigration Law

Publicado

Immigration-rights activists in New York demonstrated Tuesday against a new law passed in the southwestern state of Arizona. They said it will encourage racial profiling and break up families by permitting the indefinite detention of suspected undocumented immigrants. And the protestors said it will harm communities by making undocumented immigrants fearful of co-operating with police investigating crimes.

Immigration activists held a lunch-time rally to protest Arizona's new law that is aimed at deporting illegal immigrants. They said it would encourage racial profiling by allowing local police to demand to see the immigration papers of anyone whom they suspect of being an undocumented immigrant.

"We are here to denounce the racist and discriminatory law that was passed in Arizona," said protester Sandy Placido.

The demonstrators also announced a Freedom of Information lawsuit to force disclosure of the extent of a program called Secure Communities, which partners local police with immigration enforcement in the Department of Homeland Security.

"We see the collusion between local police and the Department of Homeland Security, and the devastating effect on our families. So what is happening in Arizona is not simply a unique situation. It is just an extension and an outgrowth of a very dangerous trend that we have seen in our country over the last few years," said Angela Fernandez, executive director of the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights.

The Arizona law, which was signed into law last Friday, requires police to ask for identification from anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. Latinos in particular fear that they will be racially targeted by police on the basis of their appearance, and said it will make undocumented immigrants reluctant to report crimes or cooperate in police investigations.

The New York demonstrators, who included activists from Latino, Caribbean, and Asian communities in New York as well as local clergy members, called on President Obama to act immediately to stop Arizona's law from being implemented. They also demanded the President issue a moratorium on deportation and detention of suspected illegal aliens until federal immigration reform is passed.

Similar rallies were also held in Arizona, Illinois and California.

In Washington, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano noted that the law doesn't take effect for 90 days. She told Congress that that would allow time for the Justice Department to, quote, look at whether the law meets constitutional safeguards or not.

Supporters of the law in Arizona say it will help cut down on crime by illegal immigrants from Mexico.

Jesse James on Bullock's Decision: I Have a "Huge Hole" In My Heart

Jesse James has a "huge hole" in his heart, but understands Sandra Bullock's decision to file for divorce and adopt a baby without him, he tells People.

Sandra Bullock files for divorce; adopts baby boy

"The decision to let my wife end our marriage, and continue the adoption of Louis on her own, has been the hardest. The love I have for Louis cannot be put to words. Not having him around to love and to hold has left a huge hole in my heart," James said.

Bullock, 45, told the magazine that she and James, 45, began the adoption process four years ago and brought Louis home in January, but they opted to keep their new addition a secret until after the Oscars. The actress says she is finalizing the adoption as a single parent and has filed for a divorce.

James also added that he is focusing an overcoming the "addiction" that led to his divorce, without specifying what the addiction is. Several women, including tattoo model Michelle "Bombshell" McGee, have claimed to have had affairs with him.

Michelle "Bombshell" McGee apologizes to Sandra Bullock

"Sandy is the love of my life, but considering the pain and devastation I have caused her, it would be selfish to not let her go. Right now it is time for me to beat this addiction that has taken two of the things I love the most in life," he said.

The Monster Garage star, who publically apologized to Bullock and his three kids for his "poor judgment," recently returned home from a treatment facility where he was dealing with what he called "personal issues," according to People.

"I have always taken great pride in proving people wrong. That time has come once again to show that I am not what everyone says I am. I know in my heart that I can be the best father possible to my four children, and the mate Sandy deserves, and realize that this is an incredible mountain to climb. But I believe that the steps I have taken in the last 30 days are the foundation for making this happen. The lifelong commitment I am making is what being a real husband and father is all about.

Jesse James apologizes to Sandra Bullock: "I deserve everything bad coming my way"

"I ask that you please do not judge Sandy for the things I have done. She has done no wrong. She played no part in any of this. She has been an amazing wife, mother, and best friend, for the over six years we have been together."

Noah s Ark found- Noah s Ark found in Turkey: Claims and Doubts

Is it the time to believe all our myths?Because an evangelical exploration group calimed to have found the Legendary and Biblically significant Noah’s Ark atop Turkey’s Mt Ararat. The explorers claimed that they found the seven wooden compartments amidst the snow and volcanic debris as The Bible had originally claimed about the Ark’s position.
The 15 strong team of fundamentalist Christians along with filmmakerYeung Wing-Cheung that they are “99.9 percent sure” that they have found the real Ark.The team also informed the press that the wood taken from the site,13,000 feet above sea level dates back to 2800 B.C.The team of Turks and Chinese archeologists of Noah’s Ark Ministries International stated that they discovered the Ark back in last October. But The Deaprtment of Ancient History at Oxford University refuted the claims as “nonsense”.
The Legend of Noah’s Ark is found in Chapters 6-9 in the Book of Genesis in The Bible. It refers to the story how the righteous man Noah saved his family and a representative of each lifeform on a vast wooden ship at the God’s command after He punishes the wickedness of mankind with a devastating flood. If the claims of these explorers prove to be true, then it would be one of the greatest Discoveries in the History and perhaps the most significant regarding Biblical History.

Dolphins GM apologizes for asking if WR's mother was a prostitute

Publicado

Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland issued a public apology to Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant on Tuesday in response to Bryant's recent revelation that a "high-level executive" from an NFL team asked him during a pre-draft interview if his mother was a prostitute.

"My job is to find out as much information as possible about a player that I'm considering drafting," Ireland said. "Sometimes that leads to asking in-depth questions. Having said that, I talked to Dez Bryant and told him I used poor judgment in one of the questions I asked him. I certainly meant no disrespect and apologized to him."

With his statement, Ireland confirmed that he was the one who asked the question. Ireland asked the question during an April 1-2 visit with the Dolphins as part of a two-week trip in which the former Oklahoma State receiver reportedly visited 11 teams before the NFL Draft.

"They asked me if my mom's a prostitute," Bryant told Yahoo.com. "No, my mom is not a prostitute. I got mad -- really mad -- but I didn't show it. I got a lot of questions like that: Does she still do drugs? I sat and answered all of them."

According to Yahoo, Bryant's mother, Angela, had him when she was 15 and conceived his younger sister and brother within the next three years. She reportedly sold drugs and served a prison term while Bryant was a child. Bryant lived with different relatives and family friends at various times during his upbringing.

Bacsik fired for racially insensitive tweet

Publicado

Former major league pitcher Mike Bacsik was fired from his job as a Dallas sports radio producer/personality Tuesday, two days after he made a racially insensitive remark about "Mexicans in San Antonio" on Twitter.

Bacsik, a left-hander made famous by giving up Barry Bonds' 756th career home run, was fired by the station after his Twitter outburst, which came after Game 5 of the Dallas Mavericks-San Antonio Spurs series. Bacsik went on Twitter after the Mavericks' Eduardo Najera tackled Manu Ginobili and was ejected, saying "Congrats to all the dirty mexicans in San Antonio."

"It's been a rough couple of days," Bacsik told ESPNDallas.com Tuesday. "Obviously, I made a terrible mistake. It was very bad and stupid on my part. The last few days, I've been getting positive e-mails. But the station changed their mind and decided to go in a different direction."

Bacsik had been appearing on radio station KTCK.

"When you tweet like I did, you can't see the sarcasm," he said. "It's not a good joke. You can't tell if it was pure hate or sarcasm. I never got to say anything. My tweets were talking for me. When you tweet like that, it's not a playful, harmless thing. It's not what it was meant to be."

Bacsik, who originally was suspended indefinitely by the station, said that when the tweet went on national television, including CNN, the station decided to let him go.

"If you want to do a job like this, your guard always has to be up," he said. "It's tough because my guard was down. I learned my lesson. I'm owning up to what I did. I did a horrible thing. I'm very sorry and will try my best for my actions to speak louder than my tweets."

Oil Spill Gulf of Mexico 2010 Satellite Images, Photos, and Pictures

Oil Spill Gulf of Mexico 2010 Satellite Images, Photos, and Pictures. The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was caused by last week’s Deepwater Horizon oil explosion and fire. Thousands of barrels of oil is getting dumped into the Gulf of Mexico daily as workers try to stop the spill.

A ruptured oil head is to blame for much of the damage.

Because many of us don’t live near the oil spill, seeing pictures is the only way to get in touch with what happened.

The spilled oil is already covering an area bigger than the state of Rhode Island . In addition, some fear that the slick could come ashore, which would do horrific damage to the ecosystem.

The fishing industry will be hardest hit by the spill. Shrimp and fish naturally migrate away from the oil in order to survive. The oyster population could experience some damage, as oysters are not mobile and the oil can get in their gills.

Dancing with the Stars elimination April 27: Jake Pavelka sent packing

Publicado

The Dancing with the Stars elimination April 27 spelled doom for former Bachelor star Jake Pavelka, as he finished the week with the lowest combined score from the judges as well as the fewest votes from the public.

It's yet another elimination for a reality TV star, which is ironic, considering the show itself is reality TV. The world of sports continued to hold its own, meanwhile, as Erin Andrews and her partner finished with the second-highest score of the week, while Chad Ochocinco climbed into third place.

A surprising fifth-place finish belonged to ice skater and Winter Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek, who thus far has been crushing it on the show.

In the end, though, Lysacek remains a favorite, along with Pussycat Dolls performer Nicole Scherzinger, who once again took the top spot.

I've mentioned a number of times the kind of advantage athletes have on a show like this, but Scherzinger might be the ultimate favorite given that she's a musical performer by trade. Dancing is part of her daily routine, no doubt.

Lysacek remains a favorite, too, and it wouldn't surprise me to see the two of them duke it out down the stretch for the top spot. Andrews remains my darkrhorse pick, though she's no longer under the radar after weeks of impressive performances.

Sandra Bullock Adoption Revelation Graces People Cover

Publicado

Sandra Bullock adoption rumors were the only thing missing in the last month. The tabloids didn't guess that a Sandra Bullock adoption was in the works, although they did speculate that she was pregnant. They came close, but didn't quite get the whole truth, in a rare detail that they missed from the Jesse James scandal. For all that was uncovered in the Bullock-James drama, and for all the mistresses that came forward, the Oscar winner somehow kept one giant detail away from the media. As such, she got to reveal the Sandra Bullock adoption plans - and her new baby - on her own terms in a People Magazine cover story.

Ever since Jesse James' affairs were uncovered, Bullock had stayed relatively quiet on the matter. Her silence and pulling out of public appearances spoke for itself, so anticipation was high for when she would come forward. Yet when she did emerge on the People Magazine cover, with her soon-to-be adopted son, no one saw it coming.

According to People, Sandra Bullock's adoption plans were years in the making, as she and James started the process four years ago. They were finally given a newborn child from New Orleans in January, who is now named Louis Bardo Bullock. The original plan was to announce Louis's existence to the world after the Oscars, until James' affairs blind-sided all else.

If not for Michelle Bombshell McGee and others, the Sandra Bullock adoption news would have been the big story after the Oscars - and been a much more heartwarming follow up. Instead, the news comes after weeks of sordid drama that overshadowed Bullock's Oscar win. But now that Louis has been revealed, the light at the end of the tunnel may be ahead.

Along with the Sandra Bullock adoption shocker, she told People that she has officially filed for divorce from James. The move was expected for weeks, but now it comes with the knowledge that she will raise Louis as a single parent.

James himself got to talk to People as well, sharing that there is a "huge hole in my heart" without Louis. However, he conceded that it would be 'selfish' not to let Bullock go, and claims he is now focused on beating his 'addiction.'

New ‘Figaro’ sparkling, beautiful

Publicado  Tuesday, April 27, 2010

As anyone who has ever enjoyed either Pierre Beaumarchais’ classic comedy or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera buffa adaptation of his play can tell you, The Marriage of Figaro is not exactly a marriage made in heaven.

But a Marriage of Figaro made by Opera Atelier can come pretty close — especially if your idea of heaven is fairly dripping with beautiful music, lavish sets and gorgeous costumes.

After milking their acclaimed 1992 production of the work for all it was worth on the world stage, artistic directors Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg have decided to do it all over again. They stripped the wraps off a sparkling new production of the work Saturday at the Elgin.

And in a champagne world where the vintage just opened should never make you regret the vintage just finished, this particular bottle of bubbly is just a hair’s breadth short of an utter triumph.

As they did in their 1992 production, OA is sticking with an English translation of Lorenzo Da Ponte’s libretto — one that just may be a little earthier and certainly more contemporary than one might expect from an 18th-century work.

But if the whole attitude of the playing is naughtily au courant — and it certainly is — the production itself is very much of the period.

Credit for that, at least in part, can be accorded to the sumptuous, shimmering period costuming of Martha Mann and the elegant opera-within-an-opera set design of the always formidable Gerard Gauci.

But it is also thanks to the beautifully baroque staging brought to life by director Pynkoski, with a rich dollop of traditionally irreverent Commedia dell’arte used once again to bring things to a boil and sweeten the pot.

Of course, Pynkoski gets a few powerful assists in spinning out Beaumarchais’ silly tale of love, lust and skullduggery amongst the Ancien Regime — not the least of which is the Tafelmusik Orchestra and Chorus, under the baton of David Fallis, brought together to put maximum charm into Mozart’s enduring score.

From a casting point of view, Pynkoski scores a coup or two as well, with baritone Phillip Addis turning in a triumph as a youthful and overly-amorous Count Almaviva. He’s paired with equally strong soprano Peggy Kriha Dye, beautifully cast as his much put-upon consort, the Countess Rosina.

Meanwhile. mezzo Wallis Giunta brings a winsome charm and a fine set of pipes to the role of Cherubino — surely opera’s most abused and amusing pants’ role — while soprano Carla Huhtanen is equal parts charm and pragmatism in the role of Susanna, lady’s maid to the Countess and putative bride in the titular marriage to the Count’s manservant.

In a lovely bit of continuity, mezzo Laura Pudwell returns to the Marcellina role she essayed back in 1992 and makes it her own, while baritones Curtis Sullivan and Vasil Garvanliev, tenor Patrick Jang and soprano Cavell Wood tackle other supporting roles with equal success.

In the end, all that’s really missing in this version of the Marriage of Figaro is, sadly, a memorable Figaro. And although bass-baritone Olivier Laquerre gives it a game and often musical try, he ultimately proves to arch by half in the role of the conniving servant — who’s simply not smart enough to figure out he’s not as smart as he thinks he is.

For those who saw OA’s 1992 edition of the work, it’s a familiar problem — indicating, if nothing else, that Pynkoski is probably so busy having fun with the other characters, he doesn’t notice that his Figaro simply isn’t firing on all cylinders.

And you know, in this production, that just might happen to you too.

Who Was the Only President to be Sworn in on a Missal?

Publicado  Monday, April 26, 2010

WASHINGTON (Politically Illustrated) – Who was the only U.S. president to be sworn in on a Roman Catholic missal? It was not John F. Kennedy! How about Lyndon B. Johnson

Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn into office on Air Force One after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. There was little time to actually prepare for a ceremony and the only biblical book on the plane was a Roman Catholic missal – Mr. Johnson took his oath on the book.

What is a Roman Catholic missal? A missal is a book containing all the instructions and texts necessary for the celebration of Mass throughout the year.

In late mediaeval times, priests would need a reference in order to conduct Mass without the assistance other ministers. Priests began to put together a book combining instructions and text needed for Mass.

Bugatti Veyron Price - Dr Evil Would Be Proud

Publicado

The Bugatti Veyron was recently showcased on National Geographic as being one of the baddest, most expensive cars you can buy. How expensive? Many people will gasp when they read what the Bugatti Veryon sticker price is...Let's just say that Dr. Evil would have been pleased if he could have one in place of destroying the world...how does One...MILLION dollars sound?

The Veyron is indeed a best, with over 1000 horsepower and a 0-60 time of under 3 seconds. What more could you ask for with such a small amount of money? Small for Bill Gates perhaps. The funny thing is that the car was engineered and built by the people who brought you the cute little Volkswagen Beetle. My friend had a 1964 Beetle, and let me tell you, we were lucky if that car would even make it up to 45 mph, let alone 60. In fact, if we hit 60, we were more than likely heading down the mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania with no brakes.

The odd thing about this car is that I think it is awesome, but looking at it more, my gosh, did somebody crash this thing into the ugly stick forest? I think those who find this car beautiful are just blinded by the beauty of its performance. I guess kinda like people who think Madonna is really hot looking, but really they are just impressed by her performance...wait, I don't think that came out right.

But, in the spirit of bad choice of words, irregardless, the car happens to be a favorite to many and will most certainly be the poster replacement of Bo Derrick, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, and the Lamborghini Countach of the 1970's.

Most consumers encounter issues and problems with their debts. To add, debt collectors seem a villain for those who have dues. Solution to this has come… the answer isDebtorboards.

Mr. Katz stated: “Debtorboards is geared to help people use the laws as they are on the books as both a shield and a sword.”. He received $36,000 from his own court case against the collection agencies. Of course, debt collectors are not that satisfied with the court case trend. Rozanne M. Andersen, Chief executive of ACA International, stated that she is affected with the increasing lawsuits, which she said cost her industry hundreds of millions of dollars a year. She said much of the raise was the effect of unclear language in the Fair Debt Collection Act. With this, Debtorboards could add challenge on the part of the debt collectors.

Debt collectors are compelled, for instance, to be familiar with them on a voice message left for a consumer, she said. But they are also outlawed from telling a third party — counting someone who might overhear a phone message — about a consumer’s debt. As added by Ms. Andersen: “We are between a rock and a hard place.” “We believe those types of Web sites are encouraging people to not take responsibility for just debt,” she added.

Debtorboards may assist consumers with their debt issues. On the other hand, Debtorboards could bring difficulties from debt collectors in pursuing their clients or consumers.

History Channel series 'America: The Story of Us' sells us short

Publicado

By TOM SHALES The Washington Post

Its intentions seem basically worthy, its execution moderately adroit, its scope ambitious and its pictures? Oooh, pretty!

What more, one well might wonder, could be asked of America: TheStory of Us, a whiz-bang, high-tech documentary miniseries airing in six two-hour blocks starting at 8 tonight on cable's History Channel?

Actually, we don't have to wonder, because it's sometimes annoyingly obvious. Crucial scarcities include creative imagination, narrative eloquence and dramatic impact. Some conceptual sophistication would have been welcome, and a good deal less huffery, puffery and gimmickry.

What America could most use less of: clichés, trite little phrases that come at you like black balls from a musket. Here those tend to come in slow motion, right at your face, when the guns are being fired ostensibly at the British by our valorous foreparents organized into – what else? – "a ragtag militia."

These slo-mo muskets are but part of a vast battery of special effects deployed to make this 12-part American history lesson visually and kinetically compelling, but snappy visuals should supplement a clever, eloquent script – not replace it.

The clichés are beyond plentiful; they're everywhere. America's Civil War was, it seems, "the fight for the soul of a nation," though an attempt to prevent violence at Harpers Ferry was a matter of "too little, too late."

Maybe everything that happens changes the course of something. Or maybe nothing that happens changes the course of anything. Americaperhaps should have been titled, with a nod to George W. Bush, "Stay the Course," but the broader, more generic title America is probably more appropriate – sadly enough – to such a vast, bland and dramatically inert undertaking.America:

What Happened to Bret Michaels? - Celebrity Apprentice star Bret Michaels health news

Publicado

Recent news has involved the health condition of entertainer Bret Michaels. Michaels is famous as the lead singer from the rock band Poison as well as a reality television star. He's appeared on his own VH1 show in search of romance called "Rock of Love" which has done several seasons. In addition, Bret Michaels was recruited as one of the latest contestants on Donald Trump's "The Celebrity Apprentice" for 2010. Michaels currently appears on the show along with Sharon Osbourne, Cyndi Lauper, Holly Robinson Peete and Curtis Stone, among other celebs. Many people have heard that Michaels was recently rushed to the hospital but are wondering what's going on. So what happened to Bret Michaels exactly?

All that's known at this point is that Bret Michaels suffered from a brain hemorrhage. He initially reported on Thursday that he was suffering a massive headache. It caused plenty of concern as he was experiencing a variety of scary symptoms, so he was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for tests and treatment. At this point, it's been reported that Michaels' doctors are searching for the source of the bleeding so they know where the hemorrhage started and how best to treat it. Various sources close to Michaels have stated he was awake and in good spirits within 48 hours of his admission to the hospital.

Bret Michaels still appears as a contestant on The Celebrity Apprentice due to the fact the show was taped prior to his health situation coming up. Several weeks ago, Michaels had another scare when he was rushed to the hospital for appendicitis. He had emergency surgery for it and was in generally good health afterwords. However, it was reported Michaels would have to cancel several upcoming concert appearances he had planned. As of this point, it's unknown whether or not doctors will be operating on Michaels for his brain hemorrhage, but updates have been coming to the official Bret Michaels website from his representative.

Wishing Bret Michaels a healthy recovery and especially that doctors can do their very best to help him in his condition.

Deadly Honeymoon: new innovative movie airs tonight!

Publicado

Deadly Honeymoon is a new innovative Lifetime Movie Network movie which airs tonight, Sunday April 25, at 8pm ET/PT. The movie goes after two young Denver newlyweds, Lindsey (Summer Glau) and Trevor Forrest (Chris Carmack) as they go on board on their honeymoon cruise. Unfortunately, this apparently ideal couple turns out not to be so ideal after all. After odd meetings and a night of wild celebrations, as well as unfaithfulness, the passengers and Lindsey recognized that Trevor is lost and might have fallen overboard. An investigation is in progress which includes an FBI Investigator (Zoe McLellan), who happened to be enjoying a holiday on the cruise as well. Shortly questions are lifted about Trevor’s death, was it really a mishap or did someone push him to his death?

Summer Glau acted in a role than we are used to see her in. She is the main character of the film and it was remarkable to see her evolve throughout the film. Another well-known face is Chris Carmack (The O.C.) who plays the not so perfect husband. His character is same with Luke in The O.C. and of course in this case it works with the story. Finally, Zoe McLellan (Dirty Sexy Money, JAG) plays the FBI Investigator who sees the courses of the lies.

'When Love Is Not Enough' review: Alcoholics not anonymous, from Lois Wilson's point of view

Publicado

Sometimes the glaze of sentiment that Hallmark Hall of Fame drizzles across the top of its productions does some artistic good. Sunday night’s When Love Is Not Enough, starring Winona Ryder and based on the life of Lois Wilson, wife of the man who co-founded Alcoholics Anonymous, was a melodramatic period piece set in the first half of the 20th century, so full of emotion that it could barely be contained to its two hours.

Barry Pepper starred this night as Bill Wilson, the businessman who went from being a hapless, ruinous drunk to a generous sober man who learned to cope with his alcoholism in painfully slow increments. (His story has been told on TV before, and by the same writer — William B. Borchert, who also wrote the 1989 telefilm My Name Is Bill W., starring James Woods as Wilson and James Garner as “Dr. Bob” — Bob Smith, who helped in Wilson’s recovery.)

Pepper gave a terrific performance on Sunday night as Bill W., giving viewers the full measure of a man doomed by his addiction to be cruel, neglectful, and pitiful before be became brave and self-sacrificing.When Love Is Not Enough, however, was Lois’ story, and Ryder played her with wide eyes of both innocence and terror. Ryder made it clear the extent to which Lois had no idea how dreadful her husband’s condition was and how, in those pre-AA days, how isolated and confused a woman married to such a man had to be.

The chief artistic problem with When Love Is Not Enough was that it spent so much time with the easy to dramatize stuff — that is, Bill’s wild drunken days. Ryder was reduced to spending at least half the TV-movie acting appalled. It was only in the final half-hour, when Ryder was allowed to show Lois as a three-dimensional woman, as capable of bitter anger at Bill mistreatment of her as she was of noble sacrifice, that we got some sense of Lois.

While I knew that Bill W. had written what became known as “The Big Book” — in When Love Is Not Enough, it’s Lois who recites its core 12 steps in voice-over narration — I wasn’t aware that she started Al-Anon, for family members and friends of alcoholics. Lois’ own pioneering work was crammed into the end of this movie. The striking thing is, however, is that it seems no matter how this story is told and re-told, it retains its power.

Exclusive Weinstein-Miramax negotiations extended through weekend

Publicado

The exclusive negotiating window between the Weinstein brothers and Walt Disney Co. over the acquisition of Miramax Films has been extended through the weekend, according to a person close to the talks.

Backed by supermarket magnate Ron Burkle and other investors, Bob and Harvey Weinstein are attempting to win back the specialty movie company they founded, sold to Disney and eventually were forced to vacate. The Weinsteins, whose Burkle-backed bid is valued at $625 million, originally had a five-day exclusive negotiating window with Disney, leaving two other bidders, brothers Alec and Tom Gores, and a company advised by David Bergstein in the wings.

Disney declined to comment on the status of the negotiations, as did a spokesperson for Weinsteins.

NASCAR: Talladega Weather

Publicado

n most cases, just discussing the weather with a peer or colleague is pretty common. If the discussion involves race fans, everyone’s ears start to perk up just a bit. Saturday’s weather in Mississippi and Alabama caused race officials to make some big decisions regarding the Talladega Superspeedway. Those decisions involved postponing the Nationwide Series race and setting up a double headerDouble headers are mostly associated with the sport of baseball. But, today, Talladega will host the Aaron’s 499 Sprint Cup race and then turn around and put the Aaron’s 312 Nationwide cars to the test. The action gets underway at 1:00 PM EST and hopefully the Busch folks can get a bit of action afterwards. Talladega weather looks much better today and officials are hopeful they can carry on as planned.

Since the Talladega weather washed out the qualifying rounds, the NASCAR rulebook was consulted to set up the race grid. The first five for the Sprint Cup will be Jimmie Johnson,Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon. Harvick won the pole for the Nationwide race and will take on Carl Edwards, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Steve Arpine and Shelby Howard. If you are really watching carefully, you’ll see that eleven drivers are set to run in both races.
